I’ve always had an interest in storytelling, from writing my first short story in fourth grade, to writing stand up comedy in seventh grade, to writing poetry freshman year of high school. It wasn’t until the summer going into my sophomore year of high school that God led me to a camera. Going forward, I taught myself the fundamentals of photography and filmmaking. My photography was featured in the Perspective Fine Art Photography Gallery in Evanston, IL. (2016-2017), my short film “Waves” was an Official Selection of the All American High School Film Festival (2017), and my short films "Transit (2018)" and "Passenger" were Official Selections of the NYU Diversity Art Festival (2018).
Growing up, I was always asking the question "why?" I always needed answers and when the questions got more and more complex, I found that stories had the most comprehensive answers. It was not enough for me to just watch and read however. I felt a natural affinity to share my investigations through my own stories. I did not feel capable of expressing myself any other way. I quickly realized that some of my peers felt similarly, but our schools were not providing adequate resources and education for us. So I took it upon myself to create a space for kids like me to learn and create. I formed a creative collective called THISKID for high school age artists to share talents, ideas, and resources with each other and share their art in public venues. It started as a shared Tumblr account and morphed into tight knit production crew that produced everything from short films to music and clothing. Since I graduated high school, THISKID has become my personal artistic vehicle, but my passion for creating space for marginalized expression remains. In my third year at NYU I joined the executive board of FOCUS (Filmmakers of Color in Unity and Support) a group dedicated to advocacy and solidarity for student filmmakers of color. In my final year, we organized the FOCUS Film Festival, NYU's first film festival by and for filmmakers of color. Since graduating, I have been freelancing full time as a Production Sound Mixer and independently produce my own films. |
